The Legislative Training and Rally on SB566, The Community Attendant Worker Act, sponsored by the Consumer/Attendant Action Network or CAAN drew a large crowd today. The training was attended by over 50 people who listened to TILRC Executive Director Mike Oxford give background information on and an explanation of SB566. Oxford also spoke to the group about grassroots methods of working with elected officials to win their support for your issues.
Following the Legislative Training the group marched over to the Statehouse for the Rally. Nearly 100 people attended the Rally for the Community Attendant Worker Act. Speakers included Tessa Goupil and Fred Miller representing CAAN, A representative for Senator Hensley's Office (he is the bill's sponsor), Disability Rights Center of Kansas Director Rocky Nichols and ED Mike Oxford and Assistant ED Ami Hyten from TILRC.
Following a box lunch most people stayed to visit with members of the legislature and encourage their support of the Community Attendant Worker Act. Currently, the bill is on the Senate calendar waiting for action by the full Senate.
